The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is the major charity in the U.K. that takes action to conserve wild birds and the places where they live. The work of the RSPB centres around research to find the precise requirements of wild birds, including crucial features of their natural habitat, and works with European, central and local government, farmers, landowners and industry to ensure that those requirements remain fulfilled in the modern world. The RSPB recognises that birds belong to no one single country, and is the UK partner of BirdLife International which is a partnership of worldwide bird and environment organisations.

The RSPB has a network of over 140 nature reserves which provide properly managed sites for most species of breeding and wintering birds that can be found in Britain and Northern Ireland. Rare breeding birds, such as bitterns and corncrakes, find ideal conditions in RSPB nature reserves. Important wintering and migrant birds, including wigeons, barnacle geese, knots and dunlins, have safe havens on RSPB wetland and estuary reserves. Britain with its extensive coastline, is particularly blessed with seabirds which nest undisturbed on a network of coastal cliffs and island reserves.

Reserves alone are insufficient to maintain the wealth of wildlife across the U.K. countryside. The RSPB argues for improved safeguards for habitats and sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) and works with planners and decision-makers to prevent conflict between development and conservation. It undertakes a strong and effective educational programme through its junior arm, the Wildlife Explorers.

RSPB members now number over 1 million and receive exclusive, award-winning magazines: BIRDS, BIRD LIFE for the junior section, or WINGBEAT for the teenagers. Members have free access to RSPB nature reserves, can join local members’ groups and help on local environmental projects.
