Home Up Albatross Petition Birds of Prey

Campaigns

Helping the RSPB to help birds and their habitats can be as good for you as it is for the environment: contact the Parliamentary Campaigns Team, and we can tell you how to campaign for the RSPB – it can mean spending as little time as it takes to write a letter.

You can make a difference

As well as being an RSPB supporter, you are a constituent and a consumer - your opinions are important, and by communicating them in the right way you can influence Members of Parliament, other elected representatives and businesses. Our Campaigning Supporters Programme will help you to get in touch with the right people at the right time, in order to secure changes that benefit birds and the environment.

Power of the pen

One of the most popular ways of supporting us is by putting pen to paper on our behalf. A good example of what a positive effect this can have is the story of Cliffe, in Kent: in 2003, the internationally protected wildlife site at Cliffe was in serious danger of being chosen by the government as an area for potential airport development. After an intense campaign, which included RSPB supporters sending hundreds of letters, No airport at Cliffe! was successful, and all plans to build on the area were dropped.

Don't worry if you think writing to a politician or business sounds a bit daunting — whenever we contact you about a campaign, we send you all the information you need to get to grips with the issue, along with tips on how to write an effective letter.  Campaigns Team staff are always available to answer your questions.

Constituency campaigning

lf you feel as though you'd like to get face-to-face with the people who can help, you could visit the advice surgery of your MP or other elected representative. These surgeries are held regularly in all constituencies, and provide an opportunity for constituents to talk to their representatives about things which may be causing them concern.

The Campaigns Team offers advice and assistance to anyone who wants to undertake these visits in support of RSPB issues. As with letter writing, the main aim is to show that environmental and conservation issues are important and relevant — to the representative and their constituents - and to urge them to take positive action.

Parliamentary lobbies

In addition to letter writing and face—to-face lobbying, the RSPB occasionally participates in parliamentary lobbies, when members and supporters travel to London and meet their MPs in Parliament. These are exciting events, and give you a chance to watch your influence in action!
